Energy Department Partners with Performance Systems Development to Deploy Asset Score and Identify Energy Efficiency Savings in Buildings

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a partnership with Performance Systems Development (PSD) to promote the use of DOE’s Building Energy Asset Scoring Tool (the Asset Score). PSD is part of the Asset Score National Leadership Network, comprised of 21 companies, federal agencies, and state and local governments committed to working with DOE to either use the Asset Score to diagnose energy efficiency opportunities in their buildings and energy-related building systems, or to support educational opportunities to spread knowledge about the Asset Score. To date, the Asset Score has been used on 825 commercial and multifamily residential buildings nationwide totaling more than 83 million square feet.

PSD’s policy work with the DOE Home Energy Score and local governments was featured in the news at Utility Dive

As new equipment is added to buildings, linkages to the real estate industry will help homeowners make deeper investments with the knowledge that they can recoup efficiency investments on sale. Local governments and municipalities are also a key places where the visibility of energy efficiency is being raised. More utility programs are starting to use the Home Energy Score.

Weatherization and Residential Energy Efficiency on Trial

A recent academic study of a DOE funded low income Weatherization Assistance Program found that the program was not saving enough energy to pay for the cost of the improvements. A wide range of commenters have piled on, emphasizing their own agendas, be it federal waste, the need for carbon markets to allow flexible investment in carbon savings, the inaccuracy of energy models and the need to move to measured savings, etc. And the study is being put forward as if prior energy efficiency studies were all flawed.
