Performance Systems Development of New York (PSD) is excited to announce that our project “SuperCharging Standardized Asset Data using EnergyPlus” has been selected as one of three projects in this funding cycle to receive a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) award from the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Building Technologies Office (BTO).

SBIR

The SBIR and STTR programs are government funded programs designed to provide support in the form of grants and contracts to small businesses conducting energy research and development to meet DOE’s specific needs. This is the third award for SBIR funding this project has received and PSD appreciates DOE’s continued support. The award will allow PSD to expand our Heat Pump Toolkit (HPTK) for heat pumps combined with envelope retrofits for any location in the US.

With this funding PSD will expand HPTK’s reports and analysis to better assist contractors in designing more cost-effective and properly sized heat pump installations that integrate with envelope improvements.  PSD will enhance the advanced heat pump selection method which combines large scale EnergyPlus results with detailed heat pump performance data. This will produce location specific performance scores and generate significant savings over typical HSPF based equipment selection methods.  PSD will also expand the patent pending, near real time heat pump performance verification method developed in prior DOE SBIR funding cycles. This award will also help PSD boost the market readiness of HPTK, including investments in online training content and user support mechanisms.

Greg Thomas, Founder and CSTO

“Making an impact has always been one of PSD’s core values and HPTK is the culmination of decades of industry expertise. These investments are critical to ensuring heat pump systems are properly designed for maximum efficiency and reduced grid impact.  These investments will also reduce the risk of increasing customer energy bills, a key consideration for low income decarbonization programs and the IRA residential rebate programs,” says PSD’s Founder, Greg Thomas, the project’s Principal Investigator.

The HPTK combines with PSD’s Compass program management platform to offer state and utility program administrators comprehensive heat pump program outcome management combined with incentive management and program reporting. PSD can also provide a Home Energy Score integrated completion report. Compass and the HPTK also support model calibration as described in the BPI 2400 Standard and required for single family DOE Home Energy Rebate modeled energy programs and provides HPXML outputs to support Inflation Reduction Act residential rebate program reporting. PSD has recently submitted the HPTK to DOE for approval under that program.
